Set in a vintage clothing store, The Desolation Prize is the story of a young woman linked with a sadistic ghost by history and obsession.

In late 2018, a phenomenal team of Vancouver filmmakers came together to develop a rich story and create a stunning production. The film is a short ghost story exploring the classic American gothic horror format. The story trods through themes of isolation and fixation. It was directed by Shane Day and produced by Jon Warren of the emerging production company, Skinner Street Films.

Pre-production

My process with the Skinner Street team began by grasping and interpreting the director’s vision and building the visuals for the characters and the world they inhabit.

As the screen-play was undergoing revision, the director and I began collaborating and exploring visual themes, characters and location scouting.

Build

Until shooting began, characters and parameters were continually evolving.

Team collaboration was vital to ensure that on the day, the production team was prepared to bring to life the vision made in pre-production. This level of organization provided a strong foundation and that, if necessary, we could improvise and shift creatively without spinning out of control.

Post-production

Marketing and promotional materials are the audience’s first interaction with a film. Wordmarks and visuals must generate excitement and reflect the ethos of the film.

The crew on The Desolation Prize was quite small, much like the budget. Because of this, I was also in charge of creating and designing promotional materials for screenings and festivals.
